On this day (16th August 1900)
- in 1900, the newspaper “Il Portafoglio Maltese” reported on the inauguration of the first two [The Birth of Christ and the Resurrection] of eight lunettes painted by Giuseppe Calì at the Mosta church.
- Dun Angelo Camilleri (1860-1927), then procurator of the church, approached Calì to depict the eight indoor murals set between each chapel. The ornamentation of the acclaimed Rotunda was owed to a fund specifically established years before by the late Reverend Paulo Xuereb DD., the first archpriest of the village. The eight lunettes were to depict episodes from the life of Christ but the authorities in question took some convincing on the subject matter. One of the two options pushed forward was actually Grognet’s (the church’s architect) own original design which proposed two angels adorning each of the eight lunettes. The episodes of the life of Christ were finally approved by Bishop Pietro Pace (1889-1914) on 9th January 1900.
- “Il Portafoglio Maltese” encouraged the public to visit the Rotunda and admire the new art, emphasising the successfully-accomplished work by Calì, already applauded for many similar works by highly-esteemed artists and art connoisseurs. A Maltese painter and son of a Neapolitan family who settled in Valletta, Giuseppe Calì (1846-1930) studied art in Naples from a very young age. His distinguished religious works embraced a foreign graft which lacked any real local antecedents and his paintings adorn many of Malta’s churches till this very day.
